MAN, I haven't done one of these in awhile. As some of you may or may not know, I had a Lyr 2 and Modi 2u prior to the announcement of the Magni 3. With the release of the Magni 3, I thought 'why not?' I don't like the Lyr 2, and a good DAC upgrade will bring a bit of flavor in my life. So, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this.actual upgrade.

I'll just start with the big one. The Magni 3 is honestly a bigger deal than I thought it would be. For $99, Schiit is essentially giving all the features of the Magni 2u for $50 less AND the actual amp has been completely reworked. The insane part of this is that the Magni 3 is actually..vastly improved over the Magni 2u.
Now, I don't usually go into the history of this kind of stuff, because it adds more fluff than context. But, in this case, it'll help me explain the sound of this amp. Originally, Jason was making an Asgard 3. However, he felt that the Asgard 2 was already tapped out as far as topology and chassis size is concerned on a Class A amp. So, he made an Asgard 3 that was Class AB and simulating the Class A sound. However, people that loved the Class A sound didn't like the Asgard 3, so he shelved it. However, he brought it back once he realized he could make the already smaller amp even smaller using the Jot's single ended section. Combine that with some new stamping stuff they use in production and the dumping of the prior knob, the Magni 3 was made.

Now, I said all that because..well, that's how the Magni 3's sound was created. The Magni 3 is a combination of some of the good bits of the Jotunheim with some of the good bits of the Asgard 2. From the Jotunheim, it got speed, resolve, a clean background, actual slam, and huge amounts of power (though to a lesser degree than a Jotunheim.) From the Asgard 2, it got a bit of warmth (not much) and smoother treble (meaning..it lacks the shout/glare of the Jotunheim and Magni 2u.) This tiny $99 amp is better than the Asgard 2, Vali 2, AND Lyr 2. It's surprising.
That said..the new wallwart is huge. I mean, it is at least twice the size of the Modi's wallwart. But hey, now it has flat, in-set rubber feet instead of those round things your stick on (it's about the little things.)
Schiit Modi Multibit
I'm going to be upfront, besides the NFB-28 god-knows-how-long-ago, this DAC was, to be blunt, my absolute favorite. It always added a slight bit of substance to every note, yet had enough resolve that everything didn't blend together like what happens with some dacs. That said, I'm not entirely sure it would have gone well with some darker-leaning headphones, but it was always a nice sound with HD800s or T1s. That said..I would not pay $600 for it. Why? Because the Mimby (that's what I'm calling the Modi Multibit) is almost exactly the same. There's a bit of difference (mostly a slight bit less resolve and it's a bit darker than it should be,) but..it's not enough that I feel anyone should spend the money on a Bimby. For $250, you get a DAC that isn't really 'beat' until you start having to throw out that 'car downpayment' kind of money (or..well, 1080Ti money at the earliest.) There's not much you can say about a DAC, as all the additions are subtle, but there's a jump in resolve, warmth, and treble smoothness from the Modi 2u. I would say, taking out the difference in sound, the Mimby is quite an improvement.
That said, it does have it's issues. People aren't going to like how much this DAC colors the sound. It adds boom to a lot of notes, slightly too dark (which cuts into the detail on the high-end,) and you have to leave it on for half-a-day to actually get the 'correct sound' from it. However, there's a lot to love here. There's also a slight bit of 'grey' in the background that all Schiit r2rs have (even the Yggy.) That same bit of 'grey' is why I can't stand the Gumby (as I find a DAC that expensive shouldn't have that kind of background.)
That said, if you don't want a 'colored sound,' but an upgrade from the Modi 2u, the Bifrost Uber is actually on par with the Mimby and Bimby (though most people may disagree with that.) It has a bit less resolve, but it a lot more neutral (or transparent) and has a black background. Plus, you can get it used for less than a Mimby and still be able to upgrade it.

Honestly..until you get into the high end of stuff, you don't need to spend anymore money than the Schiit Magni 3 and Modi Multibit. Every upgrade I've heard from here to the Gugnir's range of DACs and Amps is a sidegrade at best (or in the Burson's case, downgrade.) So, unless you REALLY want to get into this hobby or you want tubes, there's no real reason to spend anymore money past this point. The Magni 3 and Modi Multibit are all you 'need' in a sense. I'm not saying there's no improvement past this point (as there's quite a bit once you get to DACs like the NFB-1, Gumby, Metrum Amethyst,) but the rest of the mid-range is either worse (Lyr 2, Burson Soloist) or a side-grade at best (Vali 2, Bottlehead Crack.) You could make an exception for the Jotunheim as far as Amps go, but, at $350, this combo is not beaten by much else below a grand.
